To be eligible for teacher training, you need to have GCSEs graded C or above in English and Maths. Additionally, you will need a C+ grade in GCSE Science in order to teach primary. If you do not have these qualifications, don't worry! You can either retake the relevant GCSEs, or take an equivalency test.
What is an equivalency test?
An equivalency test is just an alternative exam to a GCSE, and is usually taken to prove that a candidate meets the requirements for courses such as teacher training or nursing. They're not GCSEs, but they cover similar content.
How is it different from a GCSE?
The main difference is that it's often more convenient to book an equivalency test. A lot of equivalency test providers have multiple dates to take the test available, and you'll often get the results soon after sitting the exam. With GCSEs, you can only sit the exam in November or May/June, and then you'll have to wait a couple of months to get your results.
It's worth noting that some teacher training providers will only accept equivalency tests from certain providers, so make sure you check before you book anything.
How can I study for a GCSE or equivalency test?
Depending on the test provider, you may be able to view past papers, and some providers offer courses and tutoring to support, at an extra cost.
Can I be offered a teacher training place without passing the GCSE or equivalency test?
If you have a strong application, you may be offered a teacher training place which is conditional on you passing your GCSE or equivalency test.
